Thelma's Pizza Dough
This is an authentic Italian pizza dough given to our family by our Italian-American neighbors many years ago.
Ingredients
- 3 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup warm water
Instructions
- Mix flour and salt together in large bowl. Make a well in the center.
- In a seperate bowl, mix yeast, sugar with 1 cup of warm water and stir until yeast is dissolved. When yeast starts to grow, add the oil.
- Pour the yeast mixture into the well in the flour mixture and stir until dough is rather sticky.
- Knead dough on a floured board until it becomes shiny, elastic and bubbly.
- Place dough into an oiled bowl. Roll it around a bit to lightly cover the dough with oil so that it doesn't dry out. Cover with tea towel and put in a warm place.
- Let dough rise until doubled in bulk (about one hour).
- Punch down and let it rise until it has again doubled.
Servings
Makes two 12" round pizzas or one 10 1/2 x 15" pizza
